Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per fess Gules and Azure, a fess dancett to chief Or, on the second a fess couped enhanced of the third.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Gold scroll inscribed ULTIMA RATIO REGUM in Red letters.

Symbolism
The colors scarlet and yellow are used for Artillery.  The blue represents San Francisco Bay and the yellow rectangle refers to Alameda Island, the home area of the Battalion.  The jagged yellow area alludes to the Diablo Mountains.  The motto translates to The Last Reasoning of Kings.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 16 July 1956.  It was rescinded on 5 July 1961.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the California Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Or and Gules, the setting sun behind a grizzly bear passant on a grassy field all Proper.
